Angry Rant #1

So as I'm not working today, and have bugger all else to do, I'm making another blog. Unfortunately, 'he's ranting again' was taken as a title. In which case, round of applause to that dude.

It seems though, that in this job hunting business, everyone wants to know everything about me in a nutshell. And guess what. I suck at being categorised into nutshells. In fact, I'm pretty sure everybody struggles at pushing themselves into tiny tree pods.

Hence the title. You can imagine me with a sledgehammer if it helps.

My favourite interview question by far is 'So briefly, tell me about yourself?' The correct answer is of course, 'How long have you got?. Because lets face it, CV's are just dumb. They show nothing about who you are or what you are capable of bringing to the work place.

The amount of times I've looked at vacancies, and thought. Yeah, I could do that. Put coffee in a mug. Add water. Sure, easy, no problem.

Wrong.

Because I dont have 5 years of making coffee.

Oh, unless of course, you wanted to do it for free?

Yeah sure. I went to university, got thousands of pounds of debt, to work for free. Of course, because I just love working so much that, in fact I'll pay money to commute to your office just for the fun of it.

What it boils down to, is that people are too lazy to explain anything anymore. They just want nice little packages of employees to walk in, do their shift with minimal fuss and go home again. 'Learn? Why do you want to learn for? Aren't you content with what you're doing?'

And as a result, I'm stuck in retail. A job that requires no degree or even college qualifications at all. Go me.

  1. Nothing wrong with that. My arguement being, that if I wanted to work in retail, I could have chosen to do so without incurring a huge debt with student fees. I think that there should at least be more paid internships for graduates. But retail in itself I have no issue with, its better than signing on and being on benefits, which unfortunately, is the only course of action for some people.
